I worked on the head and hair area today. I really wanted to capture the wind effect on the hair and the sunny highlights. I may still mess with it a little, but it is about how I want it.

I have started a drawing while I wait for the next commission. I am drawing a picture from a photo that I took and have always loved. To me it represents my daughter's adoption from China and how her culture and ours combined. It represents looking forward with determination to her future, yet always being able to look back at her past. The American flag is held in front of her and the Chinese flag behind. The original photo only had the American flag, but I felt like the drawing needed to have both flags to really represent her adoption. Follow along as I develop it. I made the photo a little darker so it would be easier to see the light lines of the drawing.

Look what I got.....

With my first commission, I decided to purchase a drawing desk. I was drawing in the living room on a counter desk area, but didn't have much room to stretch out. I also worried about my drawings getting damaged there by kids, the dog, toys, or food, etc. So, my new area is large, comfortable, and out of the way in the bedroom.

Here are a few examples of group portraits that I have done. Click on each to enlarge.

I am finished with Macey's drawing. It really is lovely! The photos don't do it justice at all. When taking a photo, it is hard to get the exact shades of gray and the contrast just right. But, it turned out beautiful and I feel her mom and dad will enjoy it.

The background is about half finished. It looks really nice with the rest of the portrait. These photos don't do the portrait justice. The real product is beautiful! I can't wait to see it finished.

Well, I am done with the main subject and will be adding my background. I think I will do a drape-like background. I don't want to distract too much from the subject.

I've finished the arms , top of the dress, and the little row of roses along the waistline. I'll be working on the bottom of the dress and then try to decide how to do the background. For others who may be reading, you may have noticed that most of my drawings don't have backgrounds. This customer already had a drawing of an older daughter which included a background, so I am trying to get them to match enough to be hung together.

I pretty much have the face and hair how I want them. Maybe some minor shading still. I have started the neck and arm area, then I will start the dress.

Here is where I left off last night. I will continue this morning working on the face and hair more, and then start the neck and shoulders. It wasn't as sunny this morning so the picture seems a little darker. It looks great in person though.

I have started my first commission drawing. A beautiful young lady named Macey. I always start with the eyes. If I can't get the eyes right, then I start over. I think I have a pretty good start with this one. Check back for updates as I continue.
